Newsletter - Autumn 2003

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DESK

Welcome to the Autumn 2003 edition of United Way South Australia News. We hope to make this a quarterly publication to keep our members and supporters informed on the great things that are happening at United Way South Australia.

We are now a statewide organisation and will be raising money for charities throughout South Australia. This gives us a greater capacity for working with businesses outside our traditional northern suburbs area. It will also enable us

to work with many more charities developing caring communities throughout the state.

We have also been fortunate to receive a grant from Community Benefits SA to employ a Project Manager for the Payroll Deduction campaign. Danielle Bayard has been appointed in the position initially for 9 months and began her work late in February. Danielle will be striving to develop Payroll Deduction Partnerships as our major fundraising project.

This edition will introduce you to some of our staff. Future editions will introduce you to more staff and our office, bingo booth and other important volunteers. All these people contribute greatly to the work we do at United Way SA and everyone is equally valued.

I look forward to the organisation’s continued growth and success.

Please enjoy the read.

Sioux Christiansen, Executive Director.

PAYROLL DEDUCTION PARTNERSHIPS LAUNCHED

With the addition of our Project Manager, it is an opportune time to launch Payroll Deduction Partnerships. A Community Service Announcement has been filmed and has been receiving airplay on Adelaide networks throughout April. The advertisement brings attention to the idea of giving to charity through a payroll deduction, which with United Way is pre tax, has no fees, gives a choice of charities and 100% of the donated dollar goes to charity. If you are interested in the Payroll Deduction scheme please contact Danielle Bayard at the office on 8287 0400 or on mobile 0411 874 413.

SPLASH! 2003

We launched 2003 with a new concept to South Australian fundraising – sailing. The United Way Charity Splash! Regatta saw 10 boats sail the seas for charity – raising more than $9,000 in a weekend! A fantastic effort especially for our first sailing experience. The idea came from WA where the first Fremantle to Darwin Splash! was held earlier in the year.

Our Splash! saw the boats set sail from the Port River in a race to Kangaroo Island – a 12 hour event.

Rager crossed the line at Kingscote at 7.15am having experienced moderate winds throughout most of the course, apart from being becalmed in Backstairs Passage during the early hours of the morning, then finding some air again to finish. Scud was the winner of the Cruising division with a couple of yachts taking 23 hours to complete the first leg because of the lack of wind. A day at the races was arranged to continue activities which provided a great opportunity to promote United Way to the locals. It also gave a few tired sailors time to catch up on some rehydration followed by sleep in any shade they could find!

Sunday saw the crews fresh and ready for the next stage of the regatta – KI to Wirrina in great 25 – 30 knot winds. The front had come through and this leg was going to be quick! A safe crossing saw the crews tie up their boats and head for dinner at the Paradise Wirrina Cove Resort. Donated Sir James Sparkling Brut and West End amber fluids helped warm the participants before a well-deserved nights sleep.

A leisurely sail back to the Squadron and CYCSA

finished the regatta off on an extremely positive note. Overall the entire Splash! regatta was a great success. Skippers and crews have provided excellent and positive feedback to United Way with many more boats seeking to join the regatta next year. Sioux is currently checking out possible courses for next year with shorter sails planned to accommodate the smaller boats. This may include ports of call such as Port Vincent and Port Stansbury.

Wherever the seas, the tides and the winds take us, it all augurs well for United Way SA.

Allocation of this year’s funding grants will open at the end of June. Application forms will be available from the United Way office at the end of June. Please contact the office on 8287 0400 for your form.

CLASSIC CAR RAFFLE ON HOLD

This year there will be no Classic Car raffle held. However United Way will be holding a cash raffle with first prize being $5,000. Tickets will be $2.00 each and will be sold

during the winter months. More information will be sent out to members soon and the chance for groups and charities to sell tickets and raise funds is still available.

VOLUNTEER’S DINNER

As we do each year, we will be hosting a volunteer’s dinner at the Elizabeth Tavern on Saturday July 12th. These nights are always fun and offer a great chance for volunteers to meet each other and the staff of United Way. Please mark this in your diary now!

HOLLYWOOD PLAZA BINGO OPENS

We have launched our 5th bingo booth - Hollywood Plaza - which has been outstanding so far. Thanks to all those volunteers who are running the Hollywood booth. Keep up the good work – you are doing a great job.

‘CHARITIES FOR SA’ LOBBY GROUP

United Way SA is part of this lobby group which is negotiating with the government to legislate to allow for new bingo tickets. This would mean that South Australia will be able to have new games and new payouts very

soon and take advantage of games available interstate.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS

If any member has any news they wish to add to the newsletter or would like any more information on any of the stories within the newsletter please contact Danielle on 8287 0400.

MEET THE STAFF - this section will feature different staff and volunteers each edition.

Sioux Christiansen – Executive Director

Our Executive Director Sioux brings to United Way a wealth of experience and knowledge gained from many years working in the charity management and fundraising area. Sioux loves the busy life United Way provides but equally enjoys her leisure time – which she spends with her two children (when she’s not running around

after yachts!) Sioux has worked for many years as a community volunteer herself, and is very aware of the importance of volunteering and the efforts, experience and time our volunteers give to United Way. Sioux’s favourite pastime is spending quality time with her family and friends and tending her rose garden. She says sleep is good too but slightly lacking! Carole Theiley – Very Patient Office Manager

Carole began with United Way in her full time role as Office Manager at the end of October 2002. Recently moving to Mawson Lakes, Carol enjoys working with everyone including office staff and all volunteers as well as meeting and greeting all who visit the office. Previously Carol was a Personal Assistant with the Department of Human Services. Carol loves going to the gym, although is now finding it quite a struggle to fit in as many sessions as she would like. Given her full time work, caring for her 7 year

old son, keeping up with her 2 older children, digging trenches for her watering system (not something she particularly enjoys!), studying and adding the finishing touches to her new home, it‘s hardly surprising! Relaxing comes in the form of reading, especially to her son Matthew which she always finds time to do. Danielle Bayard, Project Manager

Our newest member of staff Danielle has also had many years working in the disability sector and in other organisations in a fundraising role. Danielle had a stint with Amnesty International and more recently worked on the other side of the funding fence as a project officer with Health Promotion SA – part of the Department of Human Services. Whilst enjoying the little luxuries afforded by working in the government (such as color photocopiers, up to date

computer systems, an office with a view!), she is very pleased to be working back in the community sector. Out of work time Danielle spends time with her family which includes 2 young daughters, as well as sailing, playing touch and more recently discovering the relaxing art of mosaics – "good for me given its not an exact science! It’s very forgiving actually, which is fortunate for an artist of limited ability such as myself!"
