PA 211 Day Spotlights Lifeline Connecting Communities to Help

On PA 211 Day, Feb.11, United Way organizations across the state are recognizing the vital role 211 plays in helping Pennsylvanians access critical resources — often at moments of crisis. In Blair, Cambria, and Somerset counties, more than 6,000 211 contacts were made last year, connecting residents to help close to home.

Through PA 211, community members find assistance with food, shelter, and utility support, along with information about United Way–supported programs, including the region’s growing Diaper Bank and other direct UWSA initiatives designed to meet basic needs and promote long-term stability.

Across Pennsylvania, demand for 211 continues to rise. In 2025, PA 211 made 743,631 referrals statewide, reflecting both increased need and the growing complexity of challenges facing families and individuals. Most callers now seek help with multiple issues at once — such as housing instability paired with food insecurity or utility concerns.

“PA 211 connects individuals with trained resource navigators, who are available 24/7, 365 days of the year. This level of service is essential for people experiencing a human services crisis. The navigators can walk clients through what services they qualify for in the region. The resources are hyper-localized,” United Way President Karen Struble said.

In the Southern Alleghenies, that local connection is critical. Many residents use 211 to learn about programs like SNAP at the Market, food pantries, utility assistance, and diaper support — services that help stabilize households and reduce crisis situations before they escalate.

PA 211 Day also comes as Gov. Josh Shapiro’s proposed 2026–27 budget includes a $250,000 increase in funding, to $1 million, for PA 211, strengthening the statewide network and its ability to serve all 67 counties. The funding is critical to keeping this vital service sustainable.

When Pennsylvanians call, text, or chat with PA 211, a real person answers — providing compassionate support, accurate referrals, and data that helps communities understand emerging needs.
