United Way of the Southern Alleghenies marked some major milestones Tuesday morning during its Annual Campaign Kickoff Breakfast at the Imperial Room in Ebensburg.

The organization announced an ambitious $1.1 million campaign goal for the year — a 20% increase from last year’s total. Funds raised will support programs that help children and families in Blair, Cambria, and Somerset counties with early childhood literacy, food security, utility assistance, and other basic needs.

WHAT DOES UNITED IS THE WAY MEAN?

The update was shared by UWSA President & CEO Karen Struble and Tocqueville Society Chairman Ed Sheehan. The Tocqueville Society is comprised of United Way supporters who pledge $10,000 or more annually, either through a one-time gift or a step-up program.

“We have a bold vision of creating communities where all residents are healthy and thriving. Our efforts are part of a boarder strategy to move from charity to change,” remarked Karen Struble, United Way President & CEO.

Another highlight of the morning was a report on UWSA’s Power of the Purse fundraiser, hosted Sept. 4 by Women United of the Southern Alleghenies. The sold-out event drew more than 700 guests, raising $62,000 for early childhood programs. In addition, the event’s popular diaper drive collected 20,000 diapers and 2,000 wipes. UWSA’s diaper bank now distributes more than 14,000 diapers each month to families who need some help.

UWSA also recognized the 30th anniversary of the Family Resource Center of Blair County, which has been providing crucial early childhood programs such as Parents as Teachers for three decades.

About 80 community members attended the breakfast, which serves as United Way’s yearly showcase of impact and a rallying point for a new season of fundraising. Keynote speaker, Windber Area School District Superintendent Michael Vuckovich, provided a personal message that tied into United Way's new mantra — United is the Way — and how it is crucial to how we care for each other.

Support from the campaign sustains services provided through 28 partner agencies as well as United Way’s own projects, including Toasty Toddler, the diaper bank, and SNAP at the Market.
