2-1-1 helpline key takeaways: December call volume up

1/21/21

People in Somerset and Cambria counties continue to struggle to buy food, and to pay for rent and utilities.

The 2-1-1 hotline is a 24-hour professionally staffed helpline for all human services. The network is supported by the United Way of the Laurel Highlands. The hotline can be called for assistance with various other needs, including finding a summer camp and tax preparation.

In Somerset County, 39 people called the hotline in December with electric service assistance leading the list of needs. The call volume is up from 28 calls in November and is 26 calls over prior year.

In Cambria County, 116 people called in for assistance. That number was flat from November, but up 86 calls from prior year. Food pantry requests and rental assistance payments are among top needs in Cambria.
